TIP: Getting Holes to Line Up

This tip illustrates various techniques for getting drilled holes to line up.

This picture demonstrates the Uni-bit technique for widening holes that don't quite line up. Although this is one of the quicker ways to make holes line up, the price you pay is that if the holes are far out of alignment, you could end up making a very large hole.

This picture shows the rotary tool technique for widening a hole, as described in Chapter 7. Note how the tool is held perpendicular to the work. While this method yields a more precise solution, it takes significantly longer to achieve than widening the hole with a Uni-bit. 

In this picture, you can see the extent of a repair achieved with a rotary tool. You can see the intended hole position peaking through one of the 1/4" holes in the corner of the panel.
